Dover Alumni Pays Homage to Charter Members During Freedom Day Celebration in Lewes, DE

The Dover Alumni Chapter recently participated in the Lewes African American Heritage Commission’s 2nd Annual Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration. Lewes, DE is a city that produced (8) of the chapter’s (19) charter members. On this day, the brothers paid homage to Charter Member George H.P. Smith in the park named in his honor. The shining diamond of the day was gathering around the newly dedicated George H.P. Smith monument and singing the Kappa Hymn.

The Dover Alumni charter members that called Lewes home are: Eugene Holmes; Roland Holmes; James Maull; Richard Maull; Robert Maull; Denver B. Parker; James Parker; and George H.P. Smith.

George H.P. Smith became Lewes' first, and only, elected Black mayor. He went on to serve five consecutive terms beginning in 1994. Bro. Smith was a former Negro League baseball player; a veteran; and an educator that is remembered for his dedication to God; family; Kappa Alpha Psi; the City of Lewes; and others throughout the community.
